Come to Life!

Emergency lighting normally operates in the event of mains power failure in a semi commercial/industrial building. The power failure could be as the result of a power cut from the mains or a fire. This sudden darkness can occur, and could lead to panic and physical danger for any occupants within your building.
Emergency lighting automatically turns on and should give enough light for occupants to exit a building safely, it has an important role to play in keeping people are safe and should be readily checked and maintained in accordance with the British standard guidelines.
There are various legislation articles, defining emergency lighting, the UK fire safety legislation states that emergency lighting is required in buildings to provide light, if normal lighting fails during a fire.
The emergency escape room lighting provides illumination for persons who need to escape from the building in an emergency situation, such as a fire, or electrical power cut. The lighting insures that documents have a means of escape out of the building and can be clearly identified by the use of the emergency lighting. By having this lighting in place, it is part of the regulatory reform (fire safety) order 2005. Some emergency lighting will have motifs Applied to them in the form of a running man, stairs, doorways, and direction. (This is all dependent on the owner of the building, and their requirements.
This form of emergency lighting enables and provide safety for operators and occupants of a building to allow them time to shut down equipment, safely, and isolating.
This is not a legal requirement, but it is part of some requirements of business owners and their occupants of premises.
In areas, such as commercial kitchens or plant rooms, or a building has rooms larger than 60 m², than emergency lighting is recommended.

For the case of fire, the lights should stay on for a minimum duration of three hours, which will allow the Fire Brigade time to work through the building in the event of a fire, ensuring that all the occupants of the building have been safely evacuated.
In the case of electrical failure, the minimum duration is one hour, and this allows the buildings occupants to be evacuated, and should not be recognised until the lighting has been restored, and this is verified by a responsible person designated to the business/building.
The emergency lighting should be checked monthly by a "responsible person" within the business, where the emergency lights should be tested either by a switch key, or turning off the lighting circuits at the consumer unit. When this is carried out that responsible person need to walk past all the emergency lights to show that they are still working. They should be logged down in a fire safety logbook, and should any emergency lights have failed, then the batteries or the physical emergency light should be noted and replaced as soon as physically possible.
Over a period of time emergency lights, can fail and deteriorate. So an annual test should be carried out as above, but for over a longer period – three hours. The British standards recommend that you should have a three hour emergency lighting test once a year, in electrical terms, it is classed as a three hour soak test. Again, this should be recorded in your fire, safety, logbook/emergency, lighting, logbook, noting down the light fittings, which have failed and need to be replaced. During this test, your main lighting circuit she switched off, and your emergency lights to be left on for a three hour period to find out if the light fittings need replacing, or the backup batteries need replacing.

The UK fire regulations stipulate that your Emergency lights should be turned off and off monthly to test them, and also to have a full service test once a year.
The latest British standard recommends that you should have a three hour emergency lighting test once a year. During this test, your main light circuit she switched off, and your emergency lights to be left on for a three hour period to find out if the light fittings need replacing, or the backup batteries need replacing.
