No Electricity - Burning Smell & Smoke

I have a Burning Smell & Smoke from a Socket or a Switch

If you smell burning, or see smoke, & if this is near your power circuits, or switches.

  • Turn the electricity off either at the circuit breaker on your consumer unit.
  • Or even turn off the big main switch at the end.
  • You should call an emergency electrician straightaway, who will be able to come and ascertain the issue and rectify the problem.

It may be a simple thing of replacing a switch, a plug, or a socket, but at times the cabling in the box behind these may have burnt out, so there may have to be some additional works in either cutting back cable, refeeding new cable or connecting up past the burnt bit of cable to a clean fresh piece of cable and re-terminating in a new outlet.

If you smell burning or see smoke at the consumer unit.

Then treat this seriously.

  • Switch off the mains switch, and callout and emergency electrician as fast as possible.

There could be some loose terminations within the consumer unit (no fault of the original installer, but here there could be a problem with a wire going into a circuit breaker or even into the main switch.

  • An electrician will attend and check the fuse board, even re-terminating cables, and also replacing some of the circuit breakers or switches.

Explain to the people you are speaking to on the phone about this, and the electrician will be put on priority to come and see you very fast and very soon.

When the electrician attends please ensure that they work uninterrupted, however they will be asking you a series of questions to ascertain the issue.

When this sort of problem happens at a consumer unit, please keep your children away and keep noise down to a minimum in order for the electrician to hear things within your consumer unit and also concentrate as this can also be quite dangerous for them as they’re working on your consumer unit.

If you smell burning, or see smoke coming out of the black/grey box which feeds your electricity meter.

You may find that it feels very hot or there is some black tar oozing down from the bottom of the unit.

  • Switch off the main switch and call out an emergency electrician, or call out Uk Power Networks.

Uk Power Networks will be out to you extremely fast to fix and remedy the problem.

(Sometimes it may be better to call out your local emergency electrician to ascertain exactly what is wrong before you call out okay power networks.

Our electricians will call Uk Power Networks out on your behalf, if the problem is serious and will explain in technical terms what they have found to aid their engineers to remedy the situation fast.
